Examine the scene of the crime to find evidence
Search for and identify offenders
Interview suspects, witnesses and victims
Execute search warrants to recover property and evidence
Prepare and give evidence in court
Obtain and record information about criminals
Analyze crime data and information

Detectives need to have:

Record-keeping skills
Skill in analysing information and preparing written and verbal reports
Communication and people skills
Conflict resolution and negotiation skills
Skill in observing human behavior.
